What's happening with the lifts at Elephant & Castle Tube Station?

12 February 2008

Since last week the lifts at Elephant and Castle tube station have been alternatively 'out of order'. There are two lifts there. One lift will be out of order in the morning only to be in operation in the early evening and the other lift is suddenly out of order only to be in operation the next morning.

Last Friday evening both lifts were out of order and like all the commuters that evening I had the option of either walking up the stairs or walking back throught the station along platforms and up more stairs to use the Bakerloo exit, which would mean walking through the Elephant and Castle subways to get back to the Northern Line exit. Not safe for any woman or man. I took the safe route and walked up the stairs, which was not complementary to the health condition I have.

This morning only one lift was in operation and this evening both lifts were out of order so I had to walk up the stairs again.

I've noticed that the lifts have lately been manned and manually operated by tube staff. Are the lifts really out of order or is this really a staffing issue?

This is totally Inconvenient for everyone.
