Speed humps in E11

13 February 2008

Never mind the potholes. In E11 there has been a veritable eruption of speed humps. Recently, I endured 23 in a two mile journey from my house to the Green Man roundabout. And now, in its wisdom, Waltham Forest council tells us they're planning more. Where exactly, will they fit them - on the footpaths? Our driveways, perhaps? Are other London areas similar afflicted?

I'm not completely unreasonable. On the whole I subscribe to the 'speed kills' message. But is such a proliferation really necessary? Is it even justifiable, in fact.

My frustration is not just that of a driver/passenger - I can only hope that I will never have to travel the length of my street in a car whilst suffering any form of injury - but also as a resident. Give me the intermittent roar of cars travelling at constant speed any day, over the incessant and much louder revving up / revving down between hillocks.

And really, just how much of a deterrent are they? Could they in fact add to traffic related injuries? You'd be surprised at the speeds those of us blessed with higher performance vehicles can attain between humps. Yes, I'm irresonsible. A menance to society even. But I know I'm not the only one...
